Blog Post #4: Print Media

My fourth interview with Greg was over print media. In his home, there were usually only two newspapers: the St. Louis Post Dispatch and the Global Democrat. These would just sit on the coffee table during the day, and he would occasionally pick them up for a read. The only magazine they every had was the Parade, which came inside the newspapers.

Every morning I would get up and there on the coffee table they[the newspapers] would be sitting. I always liked to read them and do the crossword puzzles.

A quick example of a crossword puzzle taken from a newspaper. Greg would do these all the time!

While the papers would be picked up by his parents in stores, him and his dad would always get an issue of the Catholic paper and the Sunday Visitor on Sundays when they would go to church. He would always remember the paper man outside the church yelling,

"Get your papers here! Catholic and the Sunday visitor!"

Greg was never a paper boy, but he would always see them biking down the road on his way to school, thinking that he would one day be forced to do it when he was older by his parents. His favorite thing to read in the newspaper was the comics, so much in fact that when he would have children, he would read the Sunday funnies with them. His favorite comic back in the day was Beetle Bailey.

Every time I go to the refrigerator in our house I laugh because the Garfield comic that you, Evan, and I really enjoyed is still on there.

The Garfield Comic that is on the Refrigerator, it has some wear and tear on it.
Greg never had any restrictions on what he could and couldn't read. He just read whatever was in the papers his parents brought home. When he went to school, however, he would read all the books there. One of the most influential books for him was The Bible (he was taught in a catholic school). He really did like whenever they talked about World War II. Greg was especially interested in the submarine stuff.

Occasionally, there was a book trailer that would come to our school, and that's how we would get our books. There was no amazon, Kindle, or audio book stuff. Just the trailer.
When asked how he thinks newspapers hold up today, Greg believes that they don't. Newspapers lag behind every other news source. He has just one news app on his phone and he uses that more than any other app. The only thing he believes newspapers are good for are editorials. When Greg's not on his phone looking at the news he is on the internet, where you can find information instantly. Greg looks at Yahoo Finance, The New York Times, Fox, and CNN.
